How to choose the best residential flooring for your needs

What an exciting journey it can be to select new residential flooring! Flooring is possibly the biggest investment you'll make in your home. It's also the biggest expression of your style. You'll want to get it right the first time around.

Tampa Contract Floors & Tampa Flooring Gallery is a family-owned company with over 125 years of experience. There are so many wonderful flooring types, such as hardwood, tile, or luxury vinyl, but we always seem to hear the same questions: "Is laminate flooring linoleum or vinyl" and Is broadloom carpet a special kind of rug?”

What is broadloom carpet?

Broadloom is a large carpet roll, typically 12 X 6 (but sometimes it can be as wide). The word usually describes wall-to-wall but can include other styles, such as loop, texture, patterns, mosaics, and frieze. Originally, the name came about because it was woven on a wide loom.

Broadloom often, depending on the manufacturer, has a moisture backing. That backing also gives the carpet stain resistance. It can also make it feel more plush and springy when you walk. For a wall-to-wall installation, it will first be laid out over padding to line up the seams, then cut and sized to fit the room. If the room is wider than the roll, another roll will need to be purchased and then cut and seamed.

What is laminate?

This is a layered flooring made up of wood byproducts. It is an amazing simulation of wood, tile, or stone and is available in a wide assortment of color, patterns, designs, and texture features. The most typical, and strongest, the core is HDF (high-density fiberboard), but it's also available in MDF (medium density fiberboard) or plywood. You can
also get a more advanced, rigid one like SPC (stone plastic composite) that makes it feel firmer and more stable.

The top layer is what gives durability. It is a clear aluminum-oxide coated sheet that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs. Spills sit at the top just waiting to be wiped off. Laminate has an AC (Abrasion Class) Rating. The AC rating is a numerical system ranging from one to six; anything up to three classifies durability for residential use. Three and over classified for commercial flooring.
